The Power of TNX

Yes, you read it correctly: TNX—if you send text messages on your phone, then you probably know that it means “thank you”. What’s so powerful about “thank you”? Absolutely nothing if it does not leave your mouth. “Thank you” requires audible effort. As author Gladys B. Stern said, “Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.”  But when it is heard, seen or felt, “thank you” can be the catalyst for many positive outcomes: better working relationships, motivation for increased productivity, less stress—just to name a few. Marketing expert Joanna Krotz maintains that saying “thank you” in written or verbal form sets businesses apart and renders a competitive advantage! Many studies have documented the benefits of a grateful attitude expressed in saying “thank you”, and convince us that it is positive and powerful; so then,  how do we cultivate this important mindset in our own leadership?

First, regularly take time to reflect upon your own attitude of gratefulness so that you are able to give personal testimony of its benefits. Some may consider this “counting your blessings”. When you are personally oriented towards identifying things for which to be thankful, your life becomes energizing for you and for others. Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it this way:  “In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”

Then, intentionally lead by example with grateful habits: say “thank you” and write thank you notes. Remember that when you lead, you are modeling behavior for others. No doubt, others are watching you.  When we establish the “thank you” habit in our own lives, others know we value them—and the attitude of gratefulness nurtures improved relationships. Zig Ziglar said, “Of all the attitudes we can acquire, surely the attitude of gratitude is the most important and by far the most life-changing.”

The power of TNX is realized only when practiced. After all, as William Ward said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” Count your blessings, and then say “thank you” with a grateful heart!
